The Newbie Guide
Hello and welcome to Marauders: The Never War. An alternate universe Harry Potter role-play site set in 1975, the Marauders Era. A site where everything is made up and the canon doesn’t matter.
The goal of this guide is to get you up and playing as quickly as possible. Following the steps below should help you get started on your own magical adventure!
1. First off, you will need to know What’s Changed? If you’ve found this setting enticing, we suggest you read our Rules and the Plot to catch up on current events.
2. If you like what you see, join our community! To get started, you'll need to fill out our character template and submit your application. Depending on how in depth you would like to play, you may want to check out our lists:
If you would like to play a character from the books, check the canon list.
If you’d like to make a professor or an auror, check the jobs list.
If you would like to have a special ability, check the restricted claims list.
Please note that we strictly limit the number of animagus, wandless magic users, and similar abilities in play in order to keep them unique and special. If a role you're interested in is filled, PM a staff member! We may make exceptions as our player base grows or shuffle inactive characters out of the active listing.
NOTE: New players are not often, if ever, considered for many of the restricted abilities unless taking on a Canon with said abilities.
3. Next you’ll need to wait for a staff member to approve your character. While you’re doing that, we recommend:
Updating your Profile’s avatar and ensuring you display name is correct.
Reading some posts and chatting with members in the Chatbox to your left.
Please gently remind staff if it's been a few days as life can get unexpectedly busy.
4. Once you are approved the next step is to fill out our records! Be sure to post on all relevant threads here so our Admin can keep our records up to date. Once you have done that feel free to either make a new thread, plot with some folks, or jump on one of the many open threads.
You can make a plotter/tracker for you character, we have a brief guide you can follow here. Don't forget to update all your information on your profile!
That’s really all there is to it! If you have any questions, you can ask in the OOC Chatbox or you can PM an admin or moderator. Our FAQ and lists will be updated periodically based on your feedback, so please don’t be shy about asking for help!
New Player FAQ
Accounts
Do I need separate accounts for every character I make?
Yes! It makes it much easier for players to keep track of who's who. That being said, it's incredibly simple to do: Proboards makes creating additional character accounts very easy after you've set up your first.
To create a secondary account, click the Switch Account button in the lower right corner of your browser to log onto your Proboards account. From there you should be directed to your accounts management page.
Do I need to make an OOC (Out of Character) account?
No! You may choose to do so if you'd prefer, but you can also participate in any of our non-role-playing boards using your character profiles.
The only exception is for site staff members - since we want it to be clear who's actually a staff member with Admin privileges, we will ask you to create a separate account using your Chatbox name if you get promoted to one of those positions.
What is a "face claim" and is it mandatory?
Yes! A "face claim" is choosing someone's outward appearance to represent the appearance of your character. We do require you to find an actor or celebrity to represent that role.
If you're having trouble finding an actor, check out this Face Claim Directory as it can be a marvelous place to start. Also don’t be afraid to ask staff or other members of the site for help or advice in the Chatbox or via PM.
What size does my profile picture/avatar need to be?
At least 200 x 200 pixels. You don't need to worry about finding the correct size because our site will automatically scale down the picture in your mini-profile.
Character Limits
How many characters am I allowed to have?
Basically, as many as you can handle. We love active players, so as long as you're maintaining a reasonable amount of weekly activity with each character, we aren't going to micromanage you. Please be responsible about how many characters you take on.
How quickly can I make another character?
You need to make at least 5 posts with the last character you made before submitting another application.
Technical Questions
Can I open the OOC Chatbox in a separate tab?
Yes! Follow this link.
I ran into a bug/broken link and it's harshing my chill, man! What should I do?!
Say something in the OOC Chatbox! We're constantly improving the site so please don't be shy and let someone know right away!
Role-Play Content Questions
Are there age restrictions on this site?
No! Not explicitly, however we do expect all our members to conduct themselves like adults. We allow our players to explore some pretty heavy narrative themes such as bigotry, death, and grief so for that reason we encourage players around 18+.
Do I have to use era appropriate music?
No! If you're referencing music in a post, it doesn't have to be from the 1970s.
Officially, the reasoning for this is because there's a whole world of wizarding rock and music that we have no way to replicate. There's an entire culture's worth of songs that we have no way to reproduce or use.
Unofficially, it's because it's more fun to let people use the tunes they know and love. We're here to have a good time and this place has already changed the timeline, so why not have a little more fun?
What about era appropriate technology, fashion, and so on?
Try and keep it believable. Little slip ups are going to happen, but do try and keep in mind the muggle technology of the time. No laptops or cell phones, that sort of thing.
